1.12 CONTROLLING PERSONALITIES -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS==== Controlling Personalities MEANING: People who exert extreme control over different aspects of their lives. Some people control other people, others control their homes, for example. Most extreme control is doomed to failure as something will always go wrong and cannot be controlled. Known as 'control freaks' in common speech, such people are often trying to make up for a deep insecurity, i.e. something that they cannot control. Controlling people can be quite abusive as they want to run everything their own way. Of course some kind of control is essential; a lack of control can be worse than too much control. As in all things, the ideal is to find a balance. RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Abusive people are controlling; in fact the point of abusive behavior is to control another individual.
