1.35 LEARNING DISABILITY -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS=== Learning Disability MEANING: A disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations. (This definition is from the US Federal Code.) RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Some abusers have learning disabilities and have learned to hide them. Abusers are, in a sense, emotionally crippled. A learning disability can be one of the things that is causing the injury. Dealing with the disability might solve some of the abusive problems. MORE ABOUT LEARNING DISABILITY: Some people may have a learning disability and not realize it. Dyslexia, in which an intelligent person has trouble recognizing letters and words, can go undiagnosed for years, for example.
