
1.25 EMPATHY -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS==== Empathy MEANING: Sympathy; understanding another person's emotions or situation. RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Abusive people are often self-centered and do not understand the feelings of others. A lack of empathy can lead to serious problems in a relationship as it indicates an insufficient understanding within a family or couple. A complete lack of empathy is a major signal in diagnosing some personality disorders (PD) such as the narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: My 1st wife had virtually no empathy. In the 1970s no one knew much about abuse and personality disorders. Her lack of understanding and her self-centered behavior would have been a clear indication that she was mentally unhealthy.
