1.25 EMPATHY -- PSYCHOLOGY ABUSE TERMS, CONCEPTS==== Empathy MEANING: Sympathy; understanding another person's emotions or situation. RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Abusive people are often self-centered and do not understand the feelings of others. A lack of empathy can lead to serious problems in a relationship as it indicates an insufficient understanding within a family or couple. A complete lack of empathy is a major signal in diagnosing some personality disorders (PD) such as the narcissistic personality disorder (NPD).
