==== Trauma - Traumatic

MEANING: A physical or emotional wound. An intense sudden negative situation can be described as traumatic. However, extended milder behavior such as continual verbal abuse can be traumatic as in betrayal trauma.

RELEVANCE TO ABUSE: Many personality disorders can be traced back to traumas. The psychology of the 20th century was full of these tales such as the movie, "The Three Faces of Eve," in which the woman's personality split due to a trauma in early childhood. Some personality disorders such as the Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) are almost always linked to early traumas.
