1.13 PARENT ABUSE -- TYPES AND CATEGORIES OF ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR

==== Parent Abuse

MEANING: Usually the abuse by a teenager of his or her parents.

MORE ABOUT PARENT ABUSE: Parents are usually loving, forgiving, nurturing and may not realize that, over the years, they have let a severe problem develop. By allowing a teenager to become a bully, the parent has given the teen power that may be hard to take back. Counseling will almost certainly be required.

PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: As my very difficult brother grew older he became more abusive to my parents. They felt sorry for him because he clearly had a number of problems. For example, he often had temper tantrums at the age of forty. Even though my parents were divorced, he was abusive to my father when he was with him and abusive to my mother when he was with her. At the same time he demanded and got money, support and even lodging from both of them. As one therapist told me, my parents should have dealt with this problem when my brother was two years old not forty years old.
