1.22 SPOUSAL ABUSE, MENTAL CRUELTY, MARRIAGE ABUSE -- TYPES AND CATEGORIES OF ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR

==== Spousal Abuse, Mental Cruelty, Marriage Abuse

MEANING: Spousal abuse is not gender specific; it refers to violence and abuse by either a wife or a husband or same sex partner. It some cases it can refer to couples who live together but who are not married.

Marriage abuse refers to abuse within a legal marriage.

Mental cruelty is a legal terms used as grounds for divorce.

PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: While mental cruelty is a legal term and used as grounds for divorce in the court system, it also is a good explanation of abuse within a marriage, abuse that did not involve violence or physical abuse, but that made living together intolerable. For people who want to understand the underpinnings of abuse, looking up the legal definition of mental cruelty and how it has been applied may be a good place to start. Legal defintions and applications have often lead the way to an understanding of abuse, such as the current wide spread understanding of child abuse.
