1.08 ELDER ABUSE, NURSING HOME ABUSE -- TYPES AND CATEGORIES OF ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR

==== Elder Abuse, Nursing Home Abuse

MEANING: The abuse by adult children of elderly parents or the abuse by caretakers of elderly patients. This abuse can be physical, emotional or verbal and can also involve neglect. Over 2 million elderly American are victims of such abuse. Most abuse takes place in homes and not nursing homes.

PERSONAL NOTE FROM RICK DOBLE: We are just becoming aware of the extent of this problem. This is the classic stronger-weaker abuse, the elderly person being in an almost helpless position. With an adult child taking care of a parent, there may be a lot of unresolved issues between them that cause the adult child to behave in an abusive way, to 'get even' with the parent for past wrongs.
